Ellen Leather

Ellen Leather is an Australian–British young dramatic soprano based in Berlin, Germany. She is specialising in the Wagner and late-Romantic dramatic soprano repertoire. Her work is centred on vocally and psychologically demanding roles, with Brünnhilde forming the core of her current artistic focus.

In February 2026, she makes her debut as Brünnhilde in Die Walküre, marking a significant milestone in her Fach development. Her Wagner repertoire includes Helmwige (Die Walküre), Blumenmädchen (Parsifal), as well as extensive preparation and cover work for Brünnhilde (Die Walküre, Siegfried), Ortrud (Lohengrin) and Isolde (Tristan und Isolde).

She has appeared with companies including Bühnen Bern, Australian Contemporary Opera Company, Melbourne Opera, Fortitude Productions, Shoestring Opera Melbourne and Hauptstadtoper Berlin. She also re-wrote and performed in the opera-buffo “Le 66” by Offenbach at the Melbourne International Comedy.

Alongside Wagner, Ellen has performed select dramatic Mozart roles relevant to her Fach development, notably Elettra (Idomeneo) and Vitellia (La clemenza di Tito).

Her work as a singing actor is supported by sustained training in acting and improvisation, integrating vocal technique with dramatic intention and physical storytelling. She has undertaken studies with The Groundlings (Los Angeles), The Comedy Café Berlin, and Acting for TV at the School of Speech and Drama in London.

She holds two university degrees, including a first-class Master’s degree in Engineering, and has undertaken advanced vocal training as a student of the Berlin Opera Academy, the Dramatic Voices Program Berlin, and the Landesakademie Hessen. She holds a Drama Victoria prize for outstanding performance in a Monologue.

She studied singing with Professor Norma Sharp (HfM Hanns Eisler Berlin), Margaret Haggart OAM (ENO/WNO), and Professor David Wakeham (Durham University), and has participated in masterclasses and coachings with KS Deborah Polaski, Professor Lorraine DiSimone, and Dr Agnes Zwierko.

Earlier in her career, she worked as a Hospitantin on Barrie Kosky’s production of Rusalka at the Komische Oper Berlin (2011), gaining early insight into contemporary operatic production and music-theatre practice.

Looking ahead, Ellen will continue to refine her skills with a sustained focus on Brünnhilde and the Wagner dramatic soprano canon, developing repertoire that unites vocal endurance, dramatic depth, and mythic scale.
